About Laura M. Barnaby

Laura is a criminal and real estate attorney in Des Moines, Iowa.

Laura M. Barnaby is a partner with the Johnson & Bonzer Law Firm in Iowa. She graduated from Drake Law School in 2009 and sat for the July 2009 Bar exam. She passed the Bar on her first try and took her first lawyer position in Fort Dodge, as an Assistant Webster County Attorney.

As an Assistant County Attorney, Laura prosecuted all forms of Misdemeanors and Class D Felony offense. She also represented the State in Juvenile Court matters including Child In Need of Assistance cases and Juvenile Delinquency. As a Prosecutor, Laura tried over 20 jury trials with many positive results.

In 2011, Laura took a position with the Fort Dodge Public Defender’s Office. She practiced with the Public Defender for two years in Fort Dodge and spent another four years in the Story County Public Defender’s Office. As a Public Defender, Laura zealously advocated for her clients, taking many cases to trial.

Laura has defended clients charged in all ranges of offenses including, but not limited to, Murder in the First Degree, Kidnapping in the Second Degree, Sex Offenses, Public Intoxication, and Operating While Intoxicated. Laura has extensive experience in motion practice including pretrial and post-trial motions, conducting depositions, cross-examination, direct-examination, evidence presentation, and trial practice.
